CONTACT: Cheryl McCollum, Habitat for Humanity, 255-1549, ext. 114; 658-8158 (cell); cmccollum@habitatdane.org Habitat for Humanity of Dane County purchased 5.8 acres of land off Northport Drive, with plans to construct at least 16 affordable homes and town homes.
This fall, the Dane County affiliate will begin building a four-unit town home in the neighborhood located just north of Warner Park and near the Troy Gardens neighborhood. In 2009, Habitat for Humanity of Dane County anticipates building a total of six dwelling units and in 2010 an additional six dwelling units.
Last month, Habitat for Humanity of Dane County closed on its purchase of 5.8 acres of land in the Northport Commons area off Northport Drive. A Moose Lodge was previously located on the property and was sold in 2004 to Waukesha developer C-Cap. Habitat for Humanity of Dane County purchased the land from C-Cap and closed on the property on April 15. Habitat will build at least 16 affordable homes, reserve five lots for market sale and build out a neighborhood park.
Housing on four of the HFHDC-owned lots will be targeted for individuals over the age of 50 or with disabilities, while the remaining lots will be reserved for income-qualified families.
The project is targeted to families who earn 30 to 60 percent of the Dane County medium income level.
A generous $1 million lead gift from long-time Habitat volunteers Bill and Jan DeAtley combined with $1 million in additional funds to be raised by HHFDC will help construct these 16 dwellings. Habitat will finance the home purchase through its unique program of 0 percent mortgages, sweat equity and volunteer labor and donations. Their monthly payments are expected to be equal or less than they are currently paying for housing.
