Amy Ellis and Homeownership MentorHomeownership Mentors
A Homeownership Mentor works one-on-one to provide support, guidance and advocacy for families as they build their home.  The transition from renting to homeownership can be intimidating.  This one-on-one relationship is the most effective way to fill the need for support during this time.  The result is often an empowering one for the family being mentored.

Homeownership mentors should expect to commit about five hours a month to mentor their Habitat family during the six-month building process and the year after the build. A willingness to work in an educational and non-judgmental manner is a plus. For more information, contact Maggie Anderson at 255-1549, ext. 112.

Homeownership Mentor:
Sharlot Bogart (left) with Habitat Family, Amy Ellis and her daughters.
"Being a homeownership mentor has been an exciting adventure for me. Over this last year, I have watched a young single mom and her two little girls blossom with the experience of building their own home and their new lives. This young lady went way beyond her comfort zone both physically and socially. She went from someone who was afraid to go to a meeting by herself to apply for a Habitat for Humanity home to an outgoing lady wanting to put in more hours at the ReStore because she made such good friends there. She ended up feeling very secure hosting job sites and forgetting her fear of heights to climb up on a roof and pound some nails. I was allowed to sit with her when she closed on her first home, helped her paint it, helped moved all her belongings in it and decorate it. She just started out a new year by having her daughter’s ninth birthday party and an open house for all her friends and family and I couldn’t be more proud of her! Habitat for Humanity does not only build strong beautiful homes they build strong beautiful people. Thank you for this opportunity. I would be honored to do this again".
